At the end of Psalidi about 7km from the town centre, the wetlands are worth paying a visit and are a favourite spot among naWetlands of Kosture enthusiasts. If you happen to be in Kos in the spring, the migrating flamingoes are truly a sight worth making the trip for. If you continue traveling, the road begins to curve as it hugs the mountain and starts to climb it spirally.

At around the 14th km away from the town there is a steep descent which brings you to sea level and theThermes - Curative Thermal Springs Thermes (thermal springs) which naturally pump hot water into the sea and are famous for their rich therapeutic properties since ancient times. Even at night right through to the early hours of the morning, this popular spot is frequented by people who wish to escape the blazing heat of the Greek summer sun.

Going in a different direction from Kos Zipari is 8km from the town. In recent years many people have moved from the hustle and bustle of Kos Town to this fast developing village which has increased tremendously in size with new residences being built all the time.

Turning left from the main road at Zipari, Asfendiou and LZia Viewagoudi are located on the side of Mount Dikaios 14 km from the town. They are very small villages with nothing much to offer in the way of modernization but are rather typical of the traditional Greek village style and are usually bypassed on the way to Zia which is 15,5 km from Kos town and a very popular tourist destination as it is high up in theVillage House - Zia mountain offering spectacular views of the island. There are many tavernas and tourist shops which offer a variety of traditional products. The water mill is of interest and if you decide to climb up to Kefalovrisi the spring of natural running clear water gurgling from the rocks is a nice refreshing break.

Tigaki BeachIf you travel straight ahead after Zipari you eventually reach Tigaki which is 12 km from the town and is a well developed holiday resort with crystal clear waters and sandy beaches. Modern day habits show a preference for dwelling in the low lying open areas but the old settlements are still visible, tucked away among the trees on the mountainside. There are two very early Christian Basilicas of Saint John and Kapama. Nearby is the salt valley which produced tons of salt up to a couple of decades ago but has since been abandoned as the expense of mining the salt outweighed the profit. Although there are no organised beaches for naturists in Kos, Tigaki offers remote "hidden" beaches where nudists are quite happy to show all.

Horse race at pyliPyli is next in line and 15.6 km from the town. The junction of the main road which leads to the villages is adorned with a duck pond. In the village one can Pyli Duck Pondsee the ruins of the tomb of Charmylos, one of the kings of Kos in antiquity. An early Christian Basilica founded by Saint Chritodoulos and the castle of Pyli are to be found in Old Pyli. Every year on Saint George's Day, horse races are organised by the locals with the winner getting the blessings of the saint.

Marmari is a small seaside resort. If it's peace and quiet you're looking for then this is the place to be.

Antimachia CastleAntimachia
is 25 km from the town of Kos, 1 km from the airport and 3 km from the seaside resort of Mastichari. In ancient times a sanctuary to Herakles was built to commemorate his visit and his wrestling match with Antagoras. 3 km from the village, the castle of Antimachia still stands tall and proud. Inside the castle there are two churches one of which is dedicated to Saint Paraskevi where a celebration is held in her honour on the 26th of July each year. Antimachia also boasts the only working windmill in Kos.

Mastichari FieldMastichari is a small seaside community with sandy beaches, pensions and family hotels but also bustling luxury hotels. The harbour accommodates small ferry boats which run frequently back and forth to the neighbouring island of Kalymnos.

Kardamena ResortKardamena is 25 km from Kos town and is a famous mainly British resort. To the north there is a castle on the hillside which used to be inhabited by early Christians. The foundations of an ancient theatre and a tomb were found as well as the foundations of a Christian basilica. Kardamena is dotted with pubs, bars, cafes and clubs and has gained the reputation of a clubbers haven.

On the way to Kefalos, the road extends from the roundabout at Antimachia. To the north east of this road lies an attractive wooded area called Plaka which is ideal for picnics. Running water, wooden benches and tables are provided.

Paradise BeachKefalos lies 45 km away from Kos town and is the most isolated village on the island although it has developed tremendously in recent years. Kefalos probably has the most beautiful beaches on the entire island. The hill of Zini lies 8 km from the village and on it is the monastery of Saint John which celebrates its festival each year on the 29th of August. To the right is the castle with the simple chapel of Saint Anthony. If you go the same distance in the other direction you will meet Limionas, a small natural bay. A sandy beach which stretches to the east of Cape Chelona is called Almiros (which means 'salty' because of the high salt content of the sea water) although the locals have dubbed it 'Paradise Beach' and with ample reasoKastri Isletn. The volcanic beginnings of Kos are demonstrated here as bubbles of air rising from the sea bed are clearly visible coming from below the earth's crust. The picturesque islet named Kastri, which you can see as you enter Kefalos has the basilica of Saint Stephen built on the east side of its shores.
