The first plans to establish the foundation were made in 1955 by S.K. Zervos, Manos Karzis and Spiros Economou. In 1956, Professor Spiros Economou brought a group of delegates to Kos to swear the hippocratic oath under the tree where Hippocrates is said to have written his code of ethics and laid the basis of the "holy profession'. The mayor of the time organised a small ceremony and challenged the delegates to develop the area.
In 1957 they announced their inte4ntions at the convention of the neo-hippocratic school and it was finally accepted on the 10th of October 1960. There were seven founder members and the constitution was drawn up with the help of the author and solicitor Mr. Koutsoheras.
Shortly after, M. Reker, a Frenchman and executive of a large French company appointed a French representative for the foundation. Being a fervent supporter and enthusiast of medical science, he proposed that all doctors of the world should offer a monetary contribution to register themselves with the foundation and in this way enough money would be collected to start building the institute. His proposal was indeed accepted and many people began to promote his idea.
Mr. Papagiannis was the architect who was charged with the responsibility of building the Hippocratic Foundation and he chose an area of 239 000 squared metres in size near the Asklepieion. The finished construction was planned to comprise a convention hall, a conference room, laboratories, libraries, accommodation, restaurants, offices and all other necessities to ensure a comfortable and worthwhile stay for doctors from all over the world.
Today, the Hippocratic Foundation stands proudly and promotes the following:
• To follow in Hippocrates example of "Help rather than harm".
• To further the Hippocratic doctrine of improvement of life through by paying particular attention to the mind, body and soul equally.
• To spread the teaching and mastery of Hippocrates.
• The accommodation of doctors from all over the globe in the area of the Asklepieion where they can further their appreciation of Hippocrates' life and studies.
• The organise a Conference of Scientists from all over the world every five years to enable them to discuss their most recent conclusions.
• The offer of a prize for discoveries in the field of scientific medicine.
• To encourage peace and union between all nations. |
