Once again as in the other excavation zones, many mosaics were found here, the most impressive one being that of Poseidon (Neptune) battling the titan Polivotis. Others depict Orpheus who was reputedly extremely skilled at playing music. These mosaics were unfortunately taken to the museum in Rhodes. Nothing else of worth was found here and as the area had been built over several times, further excavation is not possible.
There are several Byzantine style buildings (churches) that have been found, most have been built and decorated from stones and marble slabs taken from older places of worship from the older religion of the Greeks. It is unfortunate that when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius forbade any other religion except Christianity, many of the spectacular buildings dedicated to the worship of other gods were destroyed and passed into oblivion, there glorious architecture and splendour never to be seen again. |
