Kos tastefully blends a variety of goods to shop for, ranging from traditional products unique to the island to the very latest in fashion and technology. Greece in general is cheaper for buying certain products than most other European countries and the fact that Kos is in the privileged position along with the other Dodecanese islands of having a lower VAT (Value Added Tax) than the rest of Greece, Kos is indeed a shoppers haven, especially for certain imported goods.
Try the local red cheese (tyri tis possas) matured in red wine and the ever so delicious tomato sweets (glyko tomataki). Kanelada is a refreshing sweet drink made from cinnamon and readily available in the old town and the village of Zia.
Besides the above mentioned and other traditional products there are a wide range of jewellery stores, DVD stores, computers and accessories and let's not forget the high quality shoe stores, leather and fashion stores ranging from Tommy Hillfiger to La Coste and Von Dutch, the list goes on and on. If you're lucky enough to be visiting around August, make sure you take advantage of the sales available at that time.
Most merchants accept all kinds of credit and debit cards including Diner's Club International, American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Electron, Delta Visa, as well as Maestro (British Switch cards). There are many ATM's (Automatic Teller Machines) available throughout the island for your convenience and Traveler's Cheques can be cashed at agencies dotted all over the island. |
