Prehistoric & Stone Age

The prehistoric era on Kos and the stone age are completely unknown and no information based on fact is readily available to draw conclusions from, mainly because of the many ancient earthquakes that destroyed any clues for archeologists to be able to find anything worthwhile.

Greek Neolithic FigurineBased on the folk tales of mythology and ancient writers that refer to Kos, it is believed that the first inhabitants of the island were the Kares, an ancient Greek race who emigrated from the opposite region known as Karia. Thus came about the first historically known name of Kos which was Kouris. Next came Greek colonists from Thessalia known as the Pelasgui. They were the main pre-hellenistic nation who spread themselves all over Greece and Asia. The occupancy of Kos by the Pelasguans is based on fact as the ruins found in Palioskala and Aghios Fokas verify.

Gold Jewellery from the AegeanThe first king of Kos was Triopas (which means a three eyed person probably referring to his intelligence and awareness rather than any physical trait). He was believed to be the chieftain of the Pelasguans and ruled all of Kos and Karia. The second king of Kos was Meropas I and it is from him that Kos got its second name which now from Kouris became Meropis. He was succeeded by king Triopas II. He was an inspiring and enlightened leader and Kos prospered under his rule to the extent that the island became the envy of the surrounding regions. The next king was Meropas II. He had a daughter by the name of Koon (pronounced ko-on) and she gave her name to the island. It is from her that Kos get's its present day name, Koon to Koos to Kos. King Triopas III succeeded Meropas II and formed an alliance with the then all powerful Crete which predominated the Aegean with their Minoan civilization and influenced the existing civilizations in the surrounding islands which reached its peak between 1750 and 1450 BC, transforming and in effect giving birth to the well known and historically documented Aegean civilization.
