The capital of Tilos is Megalo Chorio (large village) with stone houses closely built on the edges on the hill together with the church of Taxiarches. Above the ho uses one can see a castle where the village used to be situated until the 18th century AD. Among the deserted empty houses one finds the old church of Taxiarches (Archangel Michael) of which only a 16th century fresco had been salvaged.
About two kilometres from Megalo Chorio is the little harbour of Aghios Antonios with a small chapel of the same name and a beautiful beach. The island's best beach however is Eristos with its white sand, clear waters and trees.
The harbour of the island is Livadia situated in a bay with clean waters. Beside the settlement one can see ruins of the medieval castle and many old chapels. Built in rich vegetation is the monastery of Aghios Panteleimonas and has been dated back to between 1470 to 1480 AD, which according to archeologists is situated on the site of the ancient Temple of Poseidon. It is worth visiting not only for the monastery and the wonderful view but also for the fascinating sunsets which simply leave you breathless. |
