  The former capital of the Dodecanese is quite charming with its old mansions and lovely beaches. Symi consists of two settlements, Upper Symi and Gialos. The houses are painted ochre with bright colours on the window shutters and with red tiled roofs on which the sun glistens almost all year round. The neo-classical buildings are decorated with pediments and arched cellars. The church gardens are covered with black and white sea stones and impressive balusters while fantastic frescos decorate their interiors.
At the entrance of Gialos one is welcomed by the clock tower which has been standing there since 1880. Behind the pier of the harbour one can see the shipyard where the boats of the island were built.
At the peak of Upper Symi one can see the castle of the Ioannite Knights with their emblem at the entrance. The church of Panagia offers spectacular panoramic views of the town and the harbour.  It is worth visiting the Archeological and Nautical Museums where one can see this little island's history unfold. Emporeios is the second harbour with Byzantine ruins and in the opposite  direction is the fertile village of Pedi with its beautiful sandy beach and shallow waters. One of the island's most famous beaches is that beneath the monastery of Panormitis dedicated to the Archangel Michael where inside is the reputedly miraculous icon. Panormitis is reachable on foot (quite a distance) or by boat, the latter is recommended. Each year on the 8th of November, pilgrims arrive from all over the Dodecanese islands to honour the monastery and the Archangel, culminating in a great feast with traditional events. |
