Kasos is the southernmost island of the Dodecanese and very close to Crete with which it has frequent connections. An island with a naval tradition since antiquity, Kasos gave birth to many seamen who traveled to every corner of the earth. The capital is Phri where the only harbour of the island is found. Phri was founded in 1840 by the inhabitants of Aghia Marina. In spite of practically being deserted and abandoned by the local inhabitants, several mansions on the island still retain their old architecture. In the little Town Hall Square, one can see the monument of the holocaust, a work by Anatoli Lazarides. The old Town Hall houses an archeological collection as well as folk art objects.
There are several small hotels and rooms for rent in Phri as well as tavernas and kafeneia (traditional coffee shops). Evenings with traditional festivities are organised during the summer months with Kasiotic and Cretan music and dances. The festivities are a good opportunity to sample the local specialties and sweets, most of which are readily available at the tavernas.
Almost next door to Phri, stretches the resort settlement of Panagia with its notable church dating back to 1770.
Near the harbour one can swim at Kofteri, the municipal beach and at Emporio and immediately opposite lies the islet of Armathia with its lovely sandy beach, easily reachable by boat.
Aghia Marina is Kasos' grand village with windmills, old mansions and well preserved houses. Near the village is the Cave of Ellinokamara where various kinds of pottery from various ages have been found, proving that this was a place of worship from the Mycenaean to Hellenistic times.
Just outside the village is the cave of Selai, known for its beautiful stalactites formed in its interior over the centuries.
Passing Arvanitochori one arrives at Poli, the old capital with remains of an ancient wall. Emporios is the old commercial harbour and is used today by fishing boats coming in from the surrounding islands. At the southwestern part of the island in the area of Hadies, one comes across the Monastery of Aghios Georgios with a large guest house, while further south is the bay of Helandros where one can enjoy a swim in the clear waters. |
