 Situated in the middle of the Dodecanese chain of islands, Kos is a perfect starting point for a host of day trips to the surrounding islands and regions. Boats are picturesquely lined up at the harbour offering a wide variety of excursions.
Visit Nisyros and journey into a surreal landscape by going right down to its volcano crater. Kalymnos is the sea sponge diver's island and the unique terrain attracts mountain climbers from all over the world. The three island tour includes the islet of Pserimos with the most amazing beach. Turkey is only a half hour boat ride away with the Ancient Greek ruins of Halikarnasos.
 The hydrofoils or 'flying dolphins' are the way to travel to islands a little further away. See Rhodes, the island of the sun, myths and legends and wander back to a bygone era within the castle of the knights of Saint John which encompasses the entire old town within its walls. Visit Symi, the quaint little island with the impressive monastery of Panormitis that houses the miraculous icon of the Archangel Michael. Stand in awe as you come into the harbour of Patmos and the imposing monastery towers above you, built over the cave where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelations, the final book of the New Testament. The list is endless.
* Before you go ahead and book your excursion through your tour guide, it's worth taking a stroll past the harbour and taking a look at the prices the excursions are offered at. Chances are you will find the exact same excursion for a lot less money.
* Throughout the Dodecanese there are many churches, monasteries and other holy sites that are really worth visiting. If you wish to enter any of them it is highly recommended that you take extra clothing with you on your excursion. Women should wear a dress that is not revealing and covers the knees (no mini skirts, shorts and revealed chests) and men must wear at least a t-shirt and preferably trousers, avoid shorts. If you're a guy and you have your ears pierced, removing the earrings would be a good idea too. When entering a church, you may notice that at the head of the church where the priests usually stand there is an entrance to the 'holy of holies' where the altar is kept. Please do not go in there unless specifically allowed to by a priest. Women are not allowed in the 'holy of holies' at all. Please keep in mind that these sites are part of our culture, our heritage and religion and we appreciate the proper respect shown to them. |
