Chalki with its very few inhabitants gives the visitor a strange feeling of being alone as one is met by the two and three-storied old stone mansions and the old Chorio (village) al most completely deserted. The harbour of Nimborio is also the capital of the island. Calm and less frequented than nearby noisy Rhodes, Chalki offers hospitality and warmth.
Try the delicious local honey and the local specialty of 'Arni Ofto' (stuffed lamb with rice and liver) and the home made spaghetti patiently made by the women is second to none in taste.
If one climbs up the deserted village, the houses gape wide open with demolished walls and the only sign of life is the monastery of Panagia. It's almost like traveling back into time.
At the highest point of the village, one can see the walls of the Venetian castle and the Church of Aghios Nikolaos with its valuable frescos.
The beach is very beautiful and ideal for a swim and if you feel like taking a rather long walk, the monastery of Aghios Ioannis Alarga is about a 3 hour walk away which celebrates on the 29th of August each year with a lavish festival.
The distant beaches are accessible by boat and it's worth taking the trip to the little islet of Alimnia with its graceful bay surrounded by pine trees. |
